Why does my coolant smell?

Rancid or sulfur-like coolant odor typically indicates bacterial activity. Tramp oil, low concentration, accumulated solids, and stagnant fluid can create conditions that support continued growth. Effective control starts by identifying and correcting those operating conditions.

Diagnostic overview

Persistent coolant odor usually indicates bacterial growth. A tramp-oil film can reduce oxygen transfer, while low concentration, solids, and stagnant fluid can further support contamination. Remove the tramp oil and particulate, restore the specified concentration, and evaluate automated bacteria control when recurring odor remains a problem.

A visible oil film remains on the sump surface, and odor increases after weekends or other idle periods.
Corrective action

Concentration too low
Observed condition
A refractometer reads below the range specified by the fluid supplier. Coolant below that range may provide less corrosion, lubrication, and microbial control.
Corrective action

Solids and sludge left in the fluid
Observed condition
Dark fluid, accumulated sludge, and chips carried in the coolant indicate a solids load that can retain contaminants and interfere with fluid management.
Corrective action
Use filtration selected for the particulate type, load, and required flow. A paper bed handles mixed solids, a magnetic separator targets ferrous material, and C.R.O.S.S. incorporates particulate removal as part of recycling.

The fluid sits still over idle periods
Observed condition
Odor that is strongest after an idle period may indicate that stagnant, low-oxygen conditions are contributing to bacterial activity.
Corrective action
Evaluate circulation and filtration during idle periods against the fluid supplier's recommendations. The optional C.R.O.S.S. ozone system provides automated bacteria control so operators do not have to keep adding biocide.

The coolant has reached the end of its useful life
Observed condition
Odor persists after the preceding conditions are reviewed, and the coolant is outside the fluid supplier's usable-condition criteria.
Corrective action
Replace severely degraded coolant, then implement concentration control, contaminant removal, and recycling to protect the next charge. An engineer can review the fluid condition and application.
